Within easy reach of London, Gatwick airport is the busiest single runway airport in the world, the second largest airport in the United Kingdom and the eight largest in Europe. There are currently around 90 airlines which operate from two terminals, serving over 200 destinations. In 2008, it was the world’s 28th busiest airport in terms of passengers and 9th busiest in terms of international passengers. Charter airlines generally do not operate from Heathrow and use Gatwick as a base for London and the South East. From 1978 to 2008, many flights to and from the USA used Gatwick because of Heathrow restrictions implemented in the Bermuda II agreement between the UK and the US. The airport is a base for scheduled operators Aer Lingus, British Airways, EasyJet and Virgin Atlantic. The airport is also a base for charter airlines including Monarch Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways. Gatwick airport provides a wide range of facilities including those for business, children and disabled travelers. There are plenty of coaches, taxis and regular trains, including the Gatwick Express. There are plenty of airport parking companies and airport hotels nearby. Between 2008 and 2013 they’ll be investing £1 billion in a five-year program to transform Gatwick into one of the world’s best airports.
